About

Inplace is made by Lumen Lab, a one-person app studio. Questions, bug reports and tool requests go to woxocoso@gmail.com.

When you choose a file, your browser reads it from your device and converts it with code that runs on this page. The file isn't sent to a server, and the result is saved straight back to your device. Because of that, the practical limit is your device's memory: very large videos can fail on phones.

The work is done by open-source libraries running in your browser: Mediabunny (with the browser's WebCodecs) for video and audio, the LAME MP3 encoder compiled to WebAssembly, libheif for HEIC photos, PDF.js and pdf-lib for PDFs, qpdf (compiled to WebAssembly) for PDF passwords, gifenc for GIFs, fflate for ZIP files and SheetJS for spreadsheets.

The site is paid for by ads served by Google AdSense; ad providers may use cookies to show and measure ads. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit.

Inplace does not download from YouTube or other streaming sites. Their terms don't allow it, so the tools here only work on files you already have.

Not available yet: Word/HWP/PowerPoint to PDF, PDF to Word, OCR, and merging audio or video. If you need one of these, an email helps decide what comes next.
