Position, format and size

Choose bottom center (the default), bottom right, bottom left, top right or top center, and a small or medium size.

Formats: 1, 1 / 10, - 1 - or Page 1 of 10.

Skip the cover, start where you need

Turn on Skip first page (cover) to leave the first page without a number. Change the start number when the PDF continues an earlier part, such as a chapter that begins on page 31.

The numbers are real text

Numbers are added as text in Helvetica, one of the standard PDF fonts, not as a picture, so they print sharply and can be found with search.

The pages themselves aren't re-rendered. Numbers are drawn on top of what's already there, so pick a position that is empty in your document.

Questions

Can I number only part of the document?

You can skip the first page. For other cases, split the PDF with Split PDF, number each part with its own start number, then join them again with Merge PDF.

My document already has page numbers. What happens?

The new numbers are added on top; existing ones aren't removed. Choose a position where they won't overlap.

Does the file get re-compressed?

No. The pages are kept as they are and only the numbers are added, so the size barely changes.
