DPI sets the pixel size of each page
PDF pages are measured in units of 1/72 inch, so at 72 DPI an A4 page becomes about 595 × 842 pixels. At 150 DPI it is 1240 × 1754, and at 300 DPI 2480 × 3508.
72 DPI suits thumbnails, 150 DPI is readable on screens and in messages, and 300 DPI is for printing or zooming into small text.
JPG for photos, PNG for crisp text
JPG files are much smaller for pages with photos. PNG keeps text and line drawings perfectly sharp, but at 300 DPI the files get large.
Limits worth knowing
A PDF that asks for a password when you open it has to be unlocked with Unlock PDF first. Pages are drawn by PDF.js, the PDF engine built into Firefox, so unusual fonts or effects can look slightly different than in other viewers.
The output is a picture of each page: text in it can't be selected or searched.

Questions
Can I get the original photos out of a PDF?
No. Each page is rendered as one whole image, including text and background.
Why does the text look blurry?
Use a higher DPI. 150 DPI is fine for screens; choose 300 DPI if you'll zoom in or print.
Can I convert just a few pages?
Yes, choose the pages you want. Several pages download together as a ZIP.
