HEIC to JPG Converter

Turn iPhone HEIC photos into JPGs that open anywhere, without sending them to a server.

or drop them here

Accepts: HEIC, HEIF

Converted on this device. Your files are never uploaded.

iPhones save HEIC because it takes less space

Since iOS 11, iPhone 7 and later capture photos in HEIF (saved as .heic) by default. Apple says HEIF compresses better than JPEG, using less storage at the same visual quality.

The catch is compatibility: on Windows the Photos app needs Microsoft's HEIF Image Extensions to open them, and many upload forms only accept JPG or PNG.

Converted in your browser, even without HEIC support

Safari can decode HEIC itself, so the page uses the browser's own decoder there. Chrome, Edge and Firefox can't, so the page uses libheif compiled to WebAssembly. Either way the photo is processed on your device.

If a HEIC file contains more than one image, the primary image is converted.

Expect a bigger file and no location data

JPEG compresses less efficiently than HEIF, so the JPG is normally larger than the HEIC it came from; PNG, being lossless, is larger still.

Metadata such as the capture date and GPS location isn't copied to the new file. That's good for privacy when sharing, but keep the originals if you sort photos by date.

Questions

Can I make my iPhone take JPG photos instead?

Yes: Settings › Camera › Formats › Most Compatible. New photos are then saved as JPEG (and videos as H.264); photos you already took stay HEIC.

Can the iPhone convert to JPG when I copy photos to a PC?

Apple says media imported from an attached iPhone into Photos, Image Capture or a PC might be converted to JPEG. That happens with Settings › Apps › Photos › Transfer to Mac or PC set to Automatic; Keep Originals turns it off.

Does this work for Live Photos?

The still image of a Live Photo is a HEIC file and converts normally. The motion part is stored as a separate video and isn't included.
