GIF is limited to 256 colors per frame
The GIF format stores each frame with a color table of at most 256 colors. Gradients, skies and skin tones show banding or dithering (a dot pattern that fakes in-between colors), while flat graphics and screen recordings look clean.
GIF transparency is all-or-nothing, and a GIF has no sound.
A GIF is much bigger than the video it came from
Modern video codecs predict motion between frames; GIF doesn't, so the same few seconds usually take far more space as a GIF than as an MP4.
Frames add up fast: 10 seconds at 15 fps is 150 full images. Keep clips to 15 seconds or less and start at 480 px wide.
How frame rate and width affect the result
GIF stores each frame's delay in hundredths of a second, so 10 fps (10/100 s) and 20 fps (5/100 s) are exact, while 15 fps (6.67/100 s) can only be approximated.
Going from 320 to 640 px wide means four times as many pixels per frame, and the file grows roughly in step.

Questions
Why is my GIF so large?
Shorten the range, lower the frame rate to 10 fps, or choose 320 px. Each of these cuts the number of pixels the GIF has to store.
Can the GIF have sound?
No. The GIF format has no audio track. Share a short MP4 if sound matters.
When is MP4 a better choice than GIF?
Wherever video is accepted: a short MP4 looks better and is smaller. GIF remains the safe option where only images are allowed.
